Default Exhaust Question

Ok, when i bought my dakota r/t the guy had put duel exhaust on it. When i asked him what kind of mufflers they were, he said that he didn't know...that he had got it put on at the dealer. There are 2 2.5 inch chrome tips. They look pretty cool and sound alright. Of course they are louder than stock but they don't really have the rumble that I am looking for. I was thinking about putting a flowmaster 40 series muffler on my truck with turn-downs. The shop said they could install the muffler and 3" turn-down for $155. That would be for parts and installation. Do you guys think a turn-down would sound better than having tips? I don't want to do this and then regret it. Any advice is appreciated!

Yeah I like the tips but don't turn-downs rumble more? My cousin had turn-downs on his mustang and it really rumbled. Does anyone know if it makes that much difference?
Thanks
Dave

I guess it's *possible* that turn-downs make a difference in sound. However, a Mustang is a heck of a lot closer to the ground, and that extra rumble could come from echos or reverb coming off the pavement and under the car. My guess is that your truck is too far off the ground for that to happen.

I'd stick with the tips also. You can always put bigger tips on to change the sound. And they do look better personally. I definately don't recommend dumping the exhaust right after the muffler. It would be very loud, especially going down the road at 55+ MPH. You dang near wouldn't be able to hear your own stereo.

My buddy had a 79 Ford 4x4 on 33s with plenty of ground clearance, and his exhaust was turned down under the bed until he got the tips put on and that thing rumbled like mad. I prefer a single exhaust on trucks because it seems to work better for the low end.

dual - two of something
duel - fight between two people

Ok here's some info for ya. I have a 2004 Dak 4x4 QC 4.7L and it simply roars with the exhaust I have. I have been asked by several people if I have headers on it or if I have true duals on it. Fact is that I only have a cat back system that was custom bent to fit tight. It is totally 2.5" all the way until ya hit the last 24 inches of tubing. The last 24" are chrome tips that measure 2.5" inlet and 4" outlet. They are available from Summitt Racing and beleive me when I say what a difference they make. I had just the regular 2.5" piping running out from under the bumper but when I heard it I knew I had to change it. Now it roars and barks back when it is in park or neutral. It also seems to make my truck shift better if that makes any sense. It almost sounds as if I have a stick when indeed I don't. I also have the Flowmaster American Thunder Series 2 chamber muffler. It was about $75, the tips were $35 each, and actually the entire job without tips cost me $300. It was done in one day and had heads turning on my way out of the shop. I don't know how to get the sound of it onto my computer for you to hear, but if anyone knows a way, please let me know and I will let ya hear it for yourself. Good luck man and remember, if ya can't hear it, it aint worth it!
