Timing Chain
Hi All,
I have recently purchased a 2003 3.9 v6 with 87k miles and was wondering if the Timing Chain is one of the items that requires changing at this time. Will this chain go over 100k or is it cheap insurance to replace it now?
I just had the rotors turned and the front pads replaced. The rotors were tricky because the bearings were still on during the turning process, but they feel alot better now instead of the pulsing from the warped rotors.
Also, the rear pinion seal was leaking and the differential clunked alot so I had the rear end rebuilt. It drives much better but still has some clunking. The mechanic said that all Dodges do that.
Anyway, I really like the truck and I am want to know what will most likely be the next thing to rebuild/replace.
Thanks for any info,
Warren

iirc timing equipment is required by federal emissions law to last at least 100k miles, so the timing chain is supposed to be inspected/replaced at 105k. You'd better check a maintenance schedule though just to verify that.
If the timing chain is not making any noise then i would wait till you hit the 100 grand mark. The newer motors came with tensioners on them so they dont wear out as fast. Not sure what your clunking could be. You might want to have the trans serviced while you are at it. Locate you a maintenace schedule and keep it up to date.
