Default Both headlights wont turn on....unless pull high beams back.

Here is one for you. The other day I got in my 98 SLT, pulled the light switch and nothing. Only the yellow lights turned on. The bulbs are not burned out cause when I flick the high beams all the lights turn on while the handle is back. then when I let go of the high beam lever, they go back off???? No lights unless I drive around with the high beam lever held back.

What gives?

I had sort of the same problem, except it was only my fog lights that would not come on. First check the fuse and relay. For me, I had to end up going to the dealer and buy a new headlight switch assembly. That fixed it.

My dakota had a similiar problem, when you went from hi-beam to low-beam, only the foglights and parking lights would come on, no low-beam lights. If i held back the hi-beams or flickered it very rapidly sometimes the low-beams would come back on. Problem was the headlight indicator switch.

Maybe, only the low beams burnt out?

I hope someone with expertise on this issue sees this, since the thread is old. However, I have a problem with my headlights. One night, after work, my headlights wouldn't work. Luckily I decided to try the high beams and they worked. The next night, I remembered the prior nights dillema. I turned the switch on immediately, instead of just before I drive away as I normally do. The low beams worked. Then when I lowered the tilt wheel, they went out. When I raised the wheel one click, they came on. For the next week, I had to raise the wheel one more click for the lights to work before I discovered the wheel had to stay at the very top for them to work. I fiddled with the wires under the steering column shroud to find the the lights would work if I moved the harness to the extreme left side. Now, they won't come on at all, except for the high beam of course.
Has anyone seen this? If so, please help.

Breakopen the headlight switch and take a look to see if all of the connections are being made properly. Be careful when removing though! The connections are held in place with springs.
