Couldnt tell ya but on my 98' dakota i didnt have to do a thing with the ball joints and it had 120,000 miles on it. I think that when they replaced the 5.2 (magnums) with the 4.7 (next generation), they changed some stuff up and those generation motors and newer were the ones that were affected. (New being ones with the 3.7 and 4.7, old being (3.9, 5.2 , 5.9) Somebody please correct me if im wrong. Just have your local shop check them out they shouldnt charge you for anything.

I have a 99 dakota. I just had the ball joints replaced at 83,000 miles. You have to call dodge and tell them your vin # to see if you qualify for the recall. I didn't, go figure.

The recall only goes back to 2000. The same ball joint design goes back to '97. Best bet is replacement with Moog aftermarket ones. If you can find a nice dealer they'll probably put the 2000 replacements on your truck and not charge as much as the full a-arm jobs.
