Does anyone know if there is a difference between the type (Regular, Extended, Quad) Dakotas and the hitches that go on them? I bought a hitch that came off of a 2004 Dakota Extended Cab and it doesn't fit my 2001 Quad Cab. It's not wide enough and the holes wouldn't match up if it was.

your quad cab is just plain bigger than xtended cabs.
your truck is built to haul more (people, stuff, etc.) than the ext. cab
the years might also put a play into the equation
I put a hitch off a 96 Ram on my 97 Dak I just needed to drill one hole in each framerail

I think I may have figured out what the problem is. It would appear that the hitch did NOT come off of an '04 Dakota. I've seen 2 of the exact same hitches in the last day and they were on late 90's GM SUV's.
