Our 98 FWD has a horrible clanking noise coming from the transfer case, and it is leaking. Could it be the chain? And if so, can we disconnect the chain and run on 2WD? Hubby is stranded until we figure out what to do about this. We appreciate any ideas.

It's been forever since I pulled one of those apart. If the chain has in fact died on you and is doing nothing but taking up space in the bottom of the t-case and the truck will still move then I'd have to say the answer is yes you could limp around in 2WD until you get home. I wouldn't really recommend it but as you posted this I'm guessing there are no other options available to you. I'll try to remember to ask a more MOPAR savy friend of mine at work tonight and try to get back to you if no one else does first. Best of luck.
