Replacing Battery Cable
I have a 2000 Dakota with the 4.7. I need to replace both of the battery cables because they are all coroded on the inside of the cable. My question is how involved is doing this going to get? Where does the positive cable go? I have followed it but it dissapears somewhere. Thanks
I haven't had to do this on my truck yet, but here are the steps from the Haynes repair manual. You can get one at autozone for about $20.
1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal first, then the positive.
2. Trace each cable to their opposite ends and detach them from the starter solenoid, power distribution center and ground terminals as necassary.
*Note the routing of each cable to ensure correct installation.
3. Make sure to buy exact cables, preferably from a Mopar Certified Company.
4. Apply a light coat of battery terminal corrosion inhibitor or petroleum jelly to the threads, preventing future corrosion.
5. Attach the cable to the solenoid or ground connection and tighten the mounting nut/bolt securely.
6. Before connecting a new cable to the battery, make sure that it reaches the battery post without having to be stretched.
7. Connect the positive cable first, follwed by the negative cable.
Again, its a brief step by step with a couple pictures (that I cant show you) but it should be fairly straight forward. The hardest part would accessing the solenoid (which is where you said the cables disappear). If this doesn't work, try picking up a Haynes repair manual, or another brand of that sort. Good Luck!
