Default reading engine trouble codes 2001 4.7 Dakota

Can anyone tell me if there is any way of reading trouble codes without having the computer readout tool? Is there any way of reading the codes through the odometer? Also how can I reset the check engine light? Thanks alot

If you live in or near a decent city the auto parts stores will usually pull codes for you, and may even reset it.

I work at AutoZone and we don't charge to read your code, but per the evil people that make the ruleswe are not allowed to rest it. This may be different in other areas, I am not sure.
I have not heard of a way to read codes through the odometer.

Turn the ignition key from ON to OFF, ON, OFF, ON, OFF, ON. The codes will display on the odometer ... once all the codes are displayed, it will read "P done". I just did this on my '01.
As far as turning off the check engine light ... my code was for a cylinder misfire. I changed the plugs, ran it for a day, and the CE light went off on it's own.
