I work at AutoZone and we don't charge to read your code, but per the evil people that make the ruleswe are not allowed to rest it. This may be different in other areas, I am not sure.
I have not heard of a way to read codes through the odometer.

Turn the ignition key from ON to OFF, ON, OFF, ON, OFF, ON. The codes will display on the odometer ... once all the codes are displayed, it will read "P done". I just did this on my '01.
As far as turning off the check engine light ... my code was for a cylinder misfire. I changed the plugs, ran it for a day, and the CE light went off on it's own.
