Default speedometer

I have a 96 dodge dakota and the speedometer is very inconsistently working. It seems like it works when you apply the gas but that's it. Not sure where I need to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Most problems with speedos, weather its jumping, not working or only works sometimes, is usually the speedometer cable. I would have to suggest replacing it first.

Mine did similar things in my 86 when the speedo cable started working loose from the t-case. Might check connections to make sure nothing is loose.

Your speedometer is electronically operated (ie. no cable if you will). The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is located in either (1) near the rear of the transmission [if 2WD] or (2) near the rear of the transfer case [if 4WD]. It is located on the driver side of the transmission (or transfer case), and it is a 3-wire connector, it's the only connector around it, so there will be no mistaking it.
To test the wiring, do the following: (1) Disconnect battery. Unplug VSS connector, daytime running lamp module connector (if so equipped), and PCM connector B (the middle one). Remove instrument cluster bezel and cluster assembly. Disconnect right instrument cluster connector (there will be a gray and red connector, disconnect the gray one). (2) Probe the VSS circuit cavity of the right cluster connector (white and orange wire, between the light blue and black, and the red and gray wires.) Check for continuity to a good ground. There should be no continuity. If there is continuity, repair short. If ok, continue. (3) Check for continuity between VSS circuit cavity of right cluster connector, and the VSS connector (its the white and orange wire).
If the wiring tests ok, than it's either the gauge, or the sensor. The sensor is about $30.
