So I have a 99 Sport, manual.
I was wondering when others with similar trucks shift. I usually do around 2,000 especially in first and second and people always give me crap about it. But...when I let the RPMs get higher than that in first gear, the whole truck lurches forward. Also in the other gears, you can tell it's time to shift from the sounds. Everyone seems to think that I can shift it like a car because the max RPMs are so high.

 

depends on the car, the weight the gearing. you shift whenever you damn well feel like it. i have a 5.2 v8 and my auto shifts from 1-2 at about 2200 rpm under normal driving. on the other hand i shift my ranger at like 4k and my ninja between 11-12k

 

I don't like how fast I have to shift with the truck. Takes me forever to get going.

Oh. How about the newer ones with more intake? I wouldn't ever actually attempt it. No time, no money. Maybe later on in a small car though. I am seriously considering becoming a doctor instead of a nurse so I can pay for my future projects.

I would love an RX-8, but they are strange-looking. Sometimes I wonder how many people really know what they are buying when they get one.

 

The reason it takes you forever to get going is that you are short-shifting. I don't know what you mean by "it lurches", but it sounds like you need to practice driving more and getting the hang of a manual tranny. You're shifting before you're in the meat of the power curve and it's no wonder it takes forever to accellerate. You're bogging the engine.

 

I don't think I am though. If I let it get higher it starts whining.
The shift light always comes on at around 1500. I never shift then unless it's to 5th because the RPMs would be too low. I know when there isn't enough power.
I will try letting the RPMs go a little more in the higher gears and see how that works, but I can't with the lower ones. I guess that doesn't really solve my problem.
When do you shift?

 

let it scream i shift from first to second when its doin like 25 and chirp the tires doin it you just gotta learn to drive it it takes practice to get used to it and its easier with a loud exhaust so you can hear the way it sounds thats how i learneed in my chevy just a cat and some straight pipes

 

As for the lurching?
I have only had it happen in first.

 

I used to have a couple vehicles that was a standard my 88 ranger 5spd I shifted around 1500-2500rpm and my old 74 F150 4 speed the first gear was so low you has to shift before you got to 10mph and in 4th by 30mph. every trannys different it just takes a while to find the sweet spot. I miss drivin stick cause I love choosing my own gear and you have more control of it.
