ac bearing gone
my ac compressor started maknig noise the other day on the way home from a long trip, so I just babied it till i got home. Its making a grinding noise if the ac is on or off. so I took the belt off and spun it around and I think its the bearings in it. so for now I just put a belt on it to bypass the ac. I was wondering how hard is it to change the bearings in it, or should I just take it to a shop and let them figure it out. I have a 99 dakota 4x4 with a 318. I also noticed since I have bypassed the ac when ever I turn my defrost on I can smell coolant in the cab. I dont know if its because I bypassed the ac or my heatercore has a hole in it. I havent found any water on the floor yet (knock on wood).
any help would be apreciated.

coolant in the cab is probably unrelated and A/C pump bearings are not user serviceable. you will probably end up buying a new pump, seeing on how its a 1998 its probably a good idea anyway
A new pump sounds expensive. this truck seems like it has been breaking down alot lately. just in the past couple months I've put a new rearend in it and a front wheelbearing, my passenger side lock os sqealling now, my ac bearing went and I can smelll cooliant in the cab when the defrost is on. well i cant complain its been a good truck, I havent put too much into it in the past 2 years I've had it. ever since I put it away for the winter because my insurance got too high, when I brought it out then all these problems started to happen. maybe It's just from sitting in a damp shop all winter long. i'm gonna take it to the dealer next week for the ac and see how much it will cost. as for the heatercore how hard is it to change that? I changed the one in my 74 ford and it wasnt that bad but I know new vehicles are so hard to work on. It seems like when ever you start to have money problems thats when your vehicle starts to beak down. and it should be ok to drive without the ac pump hooked up for a while shouldnt it? anyways thanls for the advice.

wow that sucks man. don't even bother with the dealer though. they will charge you 4 times as much for the pump and then stick it to you for the install. find a trustworthy mechanic in town and see what he will charge. i changed out the ac pump in my wife's Saturn. the pump was $125 on eBay and i have the vacuum pump and ac hose tools, took me an afternoon to do it.
EXACT SAME THING HAPPEND TO ME it wont hurt at all to leave the a/c bypassed mine has been for a year and i was told in order to fix my a/c i'd have to buy a whole new compressor because when the bearings went out it took the seals out and leaked out all of the freeon and ruined the compressor Oh and as for the collant smell its probably because ur freeon leaked out smell should go away in a couple weeks mine did
hey thanks for the advice, I will try to find a shop intown that fixes ac. and the coolant smell should be fine then, will the smell go away the more i use it? well anyways thanks, and you guys saved me a lot of money.
