3.9 v6 ticking??
i dont know whats goin on with my dakota.... this morning the engine was squeaking.. has to be the accessory belt... not suprised, 49,000miles, same belt...... but for like a while now, u can hear a ticking comming from the engine... i dunno if this is normal, and i never paid attention until now.. or is one of the valves out of adjsutment... i dont know if they are hydraulic adjusters either... pain in my ***
mine does the same thing, i've been told its the timing chain, but it sounds like its the lifters to me. i don't think you need to worry about it, mines been doing it for 3-4 years and its fine.
you can also use some engine honey to smooth out some of the ticks, knocks, and bangs. (i just hope if you are getting knocks and bangs you will get them checked out at some point

I had the same issue with my 2000 5.9 motor... put in some marvel mystery oil and almost right away it was gone. loosend up some gunk for sure, motor ran smoother and mileag may have come up a tad. check this thread out...

i also had success with the marvel mystery oil. my following oil change showed just how effeciently it binds with, and removes sludge. very impressed and would recommend.

it could be the timing chain, and it could also be a timing chain gear silencer spring or springs that are getting worn out. when i get home tonight, i will check the service manual and see where they are located and see if they might be a concern. either way, if it a timing chain, or a silencer, you are looking at some head labor anf if you are not experienced with how a motor's internals work, i wouldn't jump into it.
