hissing noise
2001 dodge dakota quad cab 4.8 engine 4x4 - I have noticed in the past few months of a hissing noise coming from under the hood regardless if I am in neutral or drive. I have checked for leaks in hoses but haven't found anything. I am not losing power and gas mileage is the same. Any ideas on what it may be.
I've had luck with a 3' length of garden hose. One end to your ear and the other end pointed at possible sources of the hissing: vacuum hoses and connections, intake gaskets, etc. Just be careful of moving things like belts and fans and hot things like exhaust! [sm=signs003.gif]
I noticed the same thing on my 02 dakota and I was told that it was just water hitting the exhaust pipe. I was also told that it was from running the air conditioning. Try not running the air conditioning and see if the hissing is still there. Good Luck
I am experiencing similar problems with hissing coming from the engine compartment. I cannot see any water or anything dripping on the manifolds. The sound also occurs regardless if the A/C or Defrost is on.
The sound is very noticeable and loud, it starts out intermittent and then eventually continues.
Is there any possibility it being an exhaust leak, or even worse a head leak!!!!
Thanks for any comments.

I have an 2001 v6 that started hissing just a week or two ago. i haven't looked for it cause my exhuast is also getting to be quite loud, but it seems loudest when its first started and when i'm on the gas/clutch. i know its not water dripping and i'm pretty sure it doesn't have to do with th ac cause i haven't used it for a xouple weeks. better not be a gasket!!!
i have what appears to be a hissing noise as well. pokin around and listening with my steathascope the sound is comming from my power stearing pump. i don't think its bad, maybe its on its way but its been there for 4mo now with no noticable changes in driveability. check it out.
