Default Code reader

I have an 04 QC 4.7L and I am thinking about getting a code reader for it.

I have had readers for other vehicles in the past but it has been a while.

Any recommendations on brands?

Experiences?

Is it worth the cost?

If you are going to do OBDII why not get software, connector and laptop setup?

Digimoto is used by a lot of mechanics

I assume that this would be a Windoze interface?

I could hook something up to an old computer.

Is this preferable to the traditional code reader? How much money are we talking about?

BTW, used to live in Orangevale, Citrus Heights and Rancho Cordova. Was born in Escondido and now find myself in the Wild West.
