To many miles?
Well im really debating on what to do with my truck. Its a 98 3.9l and it has 152,000 miles on it..and im woundering if i should even think about going into further performence. Right now its got intake, highflow cat, and dual exhaust and im wanting it faster. But im not sure on how long these engines usually last. AS far as i kno the truck was baby'd till about 120,000 miles and then was sold to a brother..and he didnt really keep up with the truck. Never raced it but never had any maintenance done. So when i got it was really sluggish. Now ive put some hard miles on it. I got the truck and it had 140,000 miles. And im plannin on doing v-8 T/B and headers, cams and someone told me to rework my heads. After that i would be done. So with this many miles on my truck is it worth it?
That is the type of choice you have to make yourself. If the engine is in good overall shape (little/no oil consumption, good compression, etc) then I would say go for it. If you are really worried about it and would consider rebuilding the engine in it, if it were to go out on you then just buy bolt-on's that are unlikely to be destroyed in the event of engine failure, that way when you start fresh you can put that new cam in, see about raising compression a bit and working over the heads.........or theres the V8 route........
Well the motor runs great. Except when I get low on gas. Starts to get slow and I got a T/B spacer that ive gotta take off. But really other then that runs great. And I was thinking well if i buy all this stuff and the motor does blow up then i could just buy this http://www.ae-engines.com/chrysler39.html and be back where i was. Yea i heard the v-8 route. And i concedered that. but my gas milage sucks right now i cant go any lower
i've seen these engines with almost 300K miles on them(97-01), they all still ran pretty fine.
I have the 3.9L too 114K, GlassPack exhaust, cold air, im addin headers, true dual catless pipe, cam, spark system upgrade, ECU stuff, fuel injectors, 5.9LV8 TB, and yada yada, im really surprised how well this V6 is running though, it was driven hard by previous owner but when I had it checked out, everything was running at almost best, they seem good V6's
I would probably go V8, not much worse gas mileage(unless u have catless pipes, headers, air), but the V6 was given to me so im makin the best of it, and the glass packs are loud and grap attention, just wait till catless pipes..hehe.....
is yours 5sp?ya if your worried bout gas, i'd put Headers and have a exhaust shop run straight pipes(dous your state have emmissions tests?).
good luck with your truck, i'll letcha know how my stuff gos to if yuh want

But these motors were known for being good.
I remember reading somewhere on here, a guy had 200,000 miles on his and it was trouble free.
If you take care of her (oil changes, take care of your transmission, etc.), she will take care of you.
I bought mine in January with 86,000 miles, it now has just over 98,000 miles, and I plan on it lasting me for another 98,000+.
Yea. I usually baby her. I needa find some places around here to get her dirty though.

hey, your in Ar? I just moved from LR, Arkansas to Tulsa Oklahoma
before you get her dirty, put exhaust and air on it, that would make it more fun, I had Glass packs and just air on my 3.9 and it sounded reallllllly good! not the fastest thing but it did some big @$$ burnouts!

wow..hey dakota sport we need to really keep in touch b/c ur doing the exact same as me. No im a auto tho
Well guess imma go and continue through all my perfromce...but anyone got any ideas of why my truck sucks when im down to quarter of a tank..friend told me to go pick up something that cleans out my injectors..he's gota 240sx and had a sim prob and said that helped a lil.

hmm, go to Auto zone or O' Rielys and buy "Sea foam" or somthing like that, buy a couple or three, 1 bottle you suck thrue your Vacumn hose, let run for a min once sucked thrue, then sit for how long the bottle tells you, 2nd, the instructions tell you how to, just put it in your oil, you know, the big oil cap on the right side when your looking at the engine from the front, for the 3rd bottle, put in your gas tank
now for number one, you need a partner to give the truck gas when sucking in the sea fome, so it dousn't die. I did it to my truck and idleled better, for number 1 after you wait a 5-10 minutes startup and give it gas till all the smoke from exhaust comes out
I'm going to do that to my truck soon again too once all this high flow stuff is on my truck, right now I have 2.5" exhaust to Glasspacks and cold air, im putting headers and True dual catless straight piping on it this or next week.
well, if the sea foam dousn't work u just needa have it checked, it could be your fuel pump
ya, we should keep n touch
