Default Transmission

Hi Guys. I have a 2000 dodge dakota SLT. I had a check engine light on and sometimes it did not shift into 3rd gear when driving . It had a Check Engine light and the code read P1740. They said it is my transmission and it needs rebuilt. Is this true? They were going to do it but it was going to cost over $2000 for everything. I told them I would think about it. They told me they had cleared the code but it kept coming back right away and yet when I got it the Check Engine light was not on and has not been on from a week since then. I figured they were trying to rip me off. But if it really need replaced can I do it myself? Does anyone have a transmission rebuild manual which includes dropping it and putting it back in? All the help is apprecitated.

gm, i wouldnt recommend rebuilding a transmission unless you know exactly what you are doing. finding the problem alone will be a huge pain in the ***. keep in mind that the tranny is the most complicated piece of machinery in the entire vehicle. even simply bolting up a new one can present huge problems if you miss even the smallest steps. are you sure that it isnt the fourth gear that it is having trouble in? i think the problem might be stemming from your overdrive not properly engaging. as far as your code goes, here is the output:

P1740 A rationality error has been detected in either the TCC soleniod or overdrive solenoid systems.
P1740 (M) TCC Or O/D Solenoid Performance Problem detected in transmission convertor clutch and/or overdrive circuits (diesel engine with 4-speed auto. Trans. Only).

this code is another sign that it is most likely your overdrive not properly engaging. try turning on and turning off your overdrive gear when you are driving, it might just be stuck. that happened to me when i lived in detroit in the winter. the problem has never since returned.

My 03 had this kind of issue when I had about 10k on it and then locked into limp mode, took it to the dealer and they replaced the TCC soleniod and was good as new.
