the system i even order said it was for my truck. I just put in I have a 2000 4.7L V8 and it gave me accurate tailpipe length and everything, and ONLY the tailpipe. It also came with a flowmaster muffler that fits the truck. Guess what the measurements were on that muffler...3" inlet and 2.5" dual outlets. soo yea...

Uh huh.

You're still mistaken.

The oem pipe is 2.5"

I just walked outside and measured it. Aftermarket stuff comes in 3", but the oem is not. Your new pipe most likely has an inverted reducer on it, or the end was rolled and shrunk down.

I have a 3" system on my Ram, and I've got 2.5" stuff on my 5.0. I've seen plenty of 3" exhaust to know that the stuff that came on our trucks is not 3"

so..then i guess im just imagining things wen my tailpipe was able to fit in the other pipe freely...

*EDIT*

i didnt have tape measure so i used a strip of paper...and measured the tailpipe. I then ripped it down to size...and then i measured the other pipe. The strip of paper DID NOT go all teh way around....need I take a picture?

I'm guessing that the inlet was reduced to fit. I don't doubt you that it did fit, there are plenty of kits available with 3" pipes. What I'm saying is that the oem stuff wasn't 3". The muffler in my truck right now was an oddball, iirc the pipe stub is 2 5/8", and the OEM stuff slipped right into it.

ok look. the stock tailpipe for the dakota/durango 2gen (i dont know about other gens), all engine sizes, is 2 1/2" back from the y-collector. Rakaric, no one is saying that the pipe that you had on your truck before installing your exhaust system wasn't 3", what we are all saying is that it wasn't stock. someone replaced the piping from the y-collector back, through the cat, and all the way back. that is the only possibility. dont mean to burst your bubble. also, you need to slap whoever put your exhaust system together, or you need to return it if that is how you bought it!

Virused - There are lots of cat-back systems that use 3" pipe, but I'm fairly certain that they do so with a pipe adapter of some sort to flare from the 2.5 to 3".

Erich - if you're just buying the muffler and you're going to have someone weld it on, 2.5" will fit best.

horatio, i thank you for clarifying, but i think that you misread my post. i understand that many aftermarket systems use 3" piping, i have owned different 3" cat back systems in the past for other vehicles. i was stating that stock on all 2ndgen dakotas/durangos use 2 1/2" piping stock.
