Default Correct reading for temp gauge?

1999 Dakota 4WHDR Canadian Model. What is the proper reading for the temp gauge. My needle sits at the quarter point. Reason I'm asking is I think my thermostat is not working. I've never the heater work very well from the day I bought the truck, but I thought it had something to do with the A/C. Even with the A/C turned off, I was still able to feel cold air so I figured that in winter, this cold air was still mixing with the hot from heater and that's why I was getting medocre heat. Now that the A/C has packed it in, my heater still doesn't work great. I get warm air blowing after about 20 minutes, but not hot like in my other vehicles.

I would wager that you've got a clogged heater core. It's fairly common apparently.

Temp should be around 195 degrees. You could swap the tstat out but I doubt that'll help your heater.
