Default Idle question...

I have a 2004 CC 4X4 with the 4.7L motor, Auto tranny (5 speed I guess), and 30K miles. When my truck is warm it usually idles around 500rpm's after a second or so from coming to a stop (which I think is to low), but once in a while it will idle around 600rpm's with no accessories running and the air cond. pump is not running either. Why does it idle different under seemingly identical conditions? What should this truck normally idle at?

Completely different question here. My temp gauge barely ever goes over the minimum "normal" operating mark even after driving long distances in warm weather (I've only had truck for 4 weeks now). Where does everyone else's needle point when their engine is up to normal temp? Could mine already have a 180 deg themostat in it? Just curious. Thanks!

btw, its a 4 speed if its an auto.. are u the original owner cause dodge doesnt have a factory 180 tstat for the dakota, as long as the motor isnt stalling, not really a cause for cocern... my 3.9 does it once in a while, sometime it will vibrate to hell, just tap the gas to even it out.. another condition be is do you have your hvac on and the vent control pointed to the windshield, that my friend activates the a/c system, just incase you didnt know that

with your t-stat, its possible its stuck open, my chrysler cirrus had a similar issue, always stayed cool for the 11 years ive owned it, until it overheated to hell, and i cut out an aftermarket p.o.s. alarm and there goes the car.. how many miles are on your truck?

I am not the original owner as I've only had the truck for 4 weeks now.

It has 30K miles on it.

I always have the heater control pointed to the floor to avoid running the air cond. pump. I was aware of that, but it was a good point. Not everyone realizes that the air cond. pump will run if on defrost mode.

Truck seems to be running at 600 RPM's more often than it did when I first got it. Just not sure what the normal idle should be when in gear and up to normal operating temps...
