Default 97 dakota stalling when cold

I tried to do a search of stalling problems, but most everyone had issues when the truck was warm. My problem seems to be when the truck is cold.

I will start the truck in the morning for my drive into work, seems ok at that time. After I pull out of the driveway and give it some gas the first stop sign I get to I have to pull my foot off of the gas to brake right. Well right at that time the gas gauge moves quickly to the bottom and the truck just quits. I can restart, but have to hold the gas down a bit, but the same thing happens when I get to the next stop.

The mornings are not eceptionally cold, So Cal, more like 50's. If I let the truck warm up to it's optimum temp it is ok, about 10 minutes of idle.

Just had a major tune-up and found the fuse for the CPU was snapped. Replaced the fuse and all was well for a couple of weeks, but we had some good weather. At this point I'm looking at replaceing the fuel pump/filter as my gauge will also drop to empty for what ever reason.

Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like you might have 2 issues IMO. Start simply and pull your IAC and clean it along with your throttle plate and body, this would help with the idle. See how much that helps.

I have the same thing, Packarat. It never stalls out on me more than once, though. I have just learned to live with it. I pretty much always warm up my truck in the morning so I rarely happens, but when I jump in and take off that is always happens....guaranteed. When you start it up does it almost sputter out then rev up a couple hundred RPM then run fine? I always put the two together but they might be two different problems.

Dont laugh, but what is the IAC? lol

It's a little more serious than that. If I don't warm it up it will always just quit, I mean total power loss, at every stop. Only happens when it is cold out and I take my foot off of the gas. It even happens when I slow down to pull into a driveway or turn a corner, this is what scares me. The engine sounds a little strange also, it will rev really high like it is in a low gear.

What I did yesterday is buy some Mopar intake cleaner and cleaned out the throttle body, BTW it was pretty nasty. I found this info during a search for stalling and it has helped, kudos to Woody17 for the suggestion. At least today when I took my foot off of the gas the truck didn't lose power and decelerated slowly. I also threw in some Lucas upper cylinder lube from the advice of a neighbor. We'll see tomorrow morning if the trouble is gone.

I think he is referring to the idle air control valve. I did a home mechanic's test per Haynes and mine seems good to go.

I only got to test it twice before I had to leave it parked at the airport last week. The two mornings I started it was positive. I dreaded starting it up and driveing it home from the airport as I was not sure if the problem went away. Well it didn't stall but the RPMs still drop a bit quickly for my taste. Seems like they will start to drop just below the idle point and then bounce back up and everything is fine. Mind you I'm still decelerating and probably going 10 mph. Just taking my foot off of the gas seems to have this affect.

I have a warranty on the tune up I just had. I'm thinking about taking it back in for a cpu touch up. My thinking is if the intake was as nasty as it was maybe the shop wasn't able to get the right readings and were not able to adjust the settings properly. We'll see...

Hopefully everything turns out ok. i'm going to try Sea Foam and maybe you should look into it too.
