I put a shift kit on my old 82 ram 4x4 360. it was a stage 2 and it would throw your head back every time you shifted.

I herd they make dodges 2nd gear even more strong. I dont have a shift kit and my auto tranny scratches 2nd if i get a good launch.

Shift kits just give you better acceleration and smoother shifts, and they fix the problem with over reving shifts and under shifts. Im thinking of putting one on mine, but finding one for my 2000 looks hard.. still havent found one.

I have the transgo shift kit on mine. Works great, but would only do it if you have done major mods like user2006 or tow alot. Other then that its all in your head. And it doesn't really accel faster, it just quickens the lag in between shifts.

I did not put it in myself (cost me 250-300 to get installed, had a few other things going in so not exactly sure what just that cost), but I think they replace the valve body with a larger flow unit.
