I went from 70k champions to Plantiums +4 to Autolite 3923's... champions where old and misfired alot, so i changed them out to the Bosch Plantium +4 lost an avg of .5-1mpg and had constant misfires... with them only being in for less then 500miles, then i just put in some Autolite 3923's today so far so good, no misfires... yet...

If anyone wants those POS Bosch let me know ill give them to you super cheap worst 50dollars i spent on anything.

Just wanted to update everyone on the truck. I havnt had a chance to switch plugs out, but on the highway I have gotten just under 15 on a couple of longer trips. Around town here, when it was -40 at night with windchill for about a week, i got 8.5 on a tank...I am assuming that is contributed to weather and just short trips when the truck couldnt even warm up yet. There aer a ton of hills here and i drive it pretty hard in order to get around up here. I guess thats just how my truck is in the cold in a this town. I am planning on switching out the plugs to some autolites or ngk as soon as it warms up, and hopefully i cant get to my cap and rotor, when i did wires and plugs it seemed to be in an inconvenienr spot. Anyone know any tools or tips that will help make it easier once i do swtich them out? any suggestions on good plugs? the bosch platinums i have now suck!

Platinum doesn't conduct better, they just last longer. Copper conducts better than platinum. You'll get a better burn with copper, but the wear/replacement time is 15-30k miles, whereas platinums are supposed to last 60k miles. I'd much rather change my plugs every 15k than reduce their ability to burn the fuel.

Check your cat for rattles. fouled or inefficient plugs can cause excess unburned fuel, which can clog up the cat and cause other problems. Bad O2 sensors will cause the cat to fail early too.

I've had the platinum plugs and wiresfor over 1000 miles without a problem

but after reading this thread I might change them out this spring to see if I can do better.

Just curious, I have been reading this "don't use platinum plugs in a Dakota" all over the web but have been unable to find a single post that points to a good reason why. can someone enlighten me?
Now I am assuming we are talking about a 4.7L. Please someone correct me if I am wrong! But from what I have read on the platinum plugs not working well on the 4.7L is due to the PCM. It gives the PCM false readings and causes preignition and detonation. According to one plug manufacturer, platinum tipped electrodes run hotter than standard electrodes. For such applications, a standard plug with a colder heat range might be a safer choice.
Eric.

Eric, thanks for the reply. I don't suppose you could point me to where you've read this? the reason I question this is because the HO 4.7 actually came from the factory with platinum tipped plugs. most of the complaints about platinum plugs in a dodge engine appear to be coming from people who have done aftermarket mods to the exhaust/intake of their vehicle. it is possible thatwith thecombination with these mods the engine is running on the edge of it's parameters and a hot plug will put it over the edge, but I fail to see why it would have any detrimental affect on a stock 4.7.
