Default speedometer

I have a 98 Dakota V6 5 spd. 2wd. Speedometer and odometer don't work. I replaced the ABS speed sensor in the rear end, and it still doesn't work. Is there a speed sensor on the tranny? Haynes book says no, Auto zone says yes. I purchased a sensor from Auto zone and can't find anything that looks like it on the tranny. there is something screwed in the passenger side of the tranny with a wire coming out. is this sensor i need to replace?

Yes, there is a sensor. The one that relays MPH speed and RPM information to your guages is the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor)

I know on Fords, it's way in the back of the engine compartment, down near the bottom. Its surrounded by a heat shield. Not sure on Dodges. When I get back home i'll take a look and see if I can find it. Thats almost definitely the problem, is that sensor is either loose, broken, or the wires are fried.

on mine it was on the dirvers side, and hanging down off the tranny, look out toward where the driveshaft connects to the tranny and it should be the only thing with a plug, i just did mine this weekend, it took like 5 min to change once i had the part
