Default tailgate

the other day the tailgate on my 99 fell open going down the road, it has allways shut hard andI have had to slam it a few times to get it to latch. Is this common on the dakota, and if so what canI do to fix it?

First I would spray white lithium grease into the clasp area and work it in. Mine does that a couple times. Now I grease it every fall before winter. If you can, try to get teh handle mechanism also.

agreed, a little bit of grease seems to fix all latch problems, it fixed my door so that it now closed correctly
