Default Looking for some advice.

Hello,

This looks like a great forum, so I thought I would see if you guys could help me out. My dad is looking to buy a 2nd gen Dakota, he wants a 4wd, V8, Quad Cab, and is completely computer illiterate, so he enlisted me to help him decide what to buy.

I have done a little bit of reading, and I see that there is a lot of debate between people as to whether the 4.7 is better than the 318, and there seem to be a lot of people who like both, so I am assuming they must both be pretty decent engines, I don't hear much discussion of the 360 though, is there a reason for that? What are the pros/cons of the 4.7 vs. 5.2 vs. 5.9?

Are there certain model years to stay away from? My dad is looking for a truck with enough guts ( and tranny ) to pull a ~4000lb utility trailer with every once in a while (not too often, and not very far), as well as pull a small (~14 ft) camper on a little longer distances. Primarily though, this truck with be his running around truck, for running into town (35 miles) to run errands, and that sort of thing, so he is looking for some thing that will get decent fuel mileage; he has a 1997 3/4 ton Dodge Ram with the 12 valve Cummins that he uses for most of the heavy duty work

He is looking to spend right around 10K, so I am assuming that is going put him around the <2002 model range?

Anyway, thanks in advance for the help!

I dont know a whole lot about the 5.9. My buddy has one in his durango and it is a strong engine but I have the 4.7 in my 2002 Dakota Quad Cab and I can keep up with him. I also pull a 5500 pound boat and the 4.7 pulls it fine. I get around 17-18 MPG and I have plenty of pulling power. I would highly recommend the 4.7L as it is a strong engine, its tranny has two ratios for second gear, and it get decent mileage. My buddys durango only gets10-12 MPG.You wont be disappointed with the 4.7 if you find one in good condition.
