Default no overdrive when warm

hey guys

i got a 1999 dodge dakota sport 4x4 and it will only go into 4th gear (overdrive) when its completely cold. when i drive it for the first time of the day she goes into over drive just fine but once the truck starts warming up it will kick back into third. i took it to my buddy's dad's tranny shop and he sed its something internal cuz he dropped the pan and tried a new solennoid and everything. he sed it could be the overdrive clutch seal is worn and wen the fluid warms up and thins out it passes right thru the seal which is why it wount let it into 4th. now he sed to pull the tranny and put it back in is $350 alone but im pretty sure i can just do that myself. is it hard? im 18 and have done some pretty crazy projects and i can do anything but trannys haha. any tips? or have any of you guys ever had the same problem?

You should be able to do it. If this is your first time, have a buddy to help you and a tranny jack. It's more intimidating then it is.
