Default Warranty Expiring – What to Look For?

Hi,
I have about 100 miles left on my factory bumper to bumper warranty and was wondering what I might need to look for in things that normally go wrong with the Durango at this mileage (35,900 miles). It's an 05 Durango SLT with the Hemi, 4x4. I just bought it 1,000 miles ago and the only thing I've found that needs to be repaired is a dead pixel in the DVD screen.

A few things I'm not sure about:

1) The brakes just started squeaking very slightly during braking, like the pads are wearing down. The outside pads on all the wheels look okay, about a 1/4" of pad left. I am going to try to find time to take the wheels off tonight to check the inside pads. The brake fluid reservoir is about a half inch under the max mark.

2) Sometimes when I start it up in the morning, the engine fan runs real loud until I get up to speed. The same thing happened with my 02 Durango R/T, so I assume it's nothing to worry about?

3) The power steering fluid is at the minimum mark. I don't see any sign of leakage, unless it was cleaned off by the dealer I bought it from (a Toyota dealer).

4) The info center (compass, gas mileage, etc.) only displays average fuel economy changes in 2-4 tenths at a time. For instance, it sits at 17.2 mpg, and if I drive it a little hard, it drops directly to 16.9, or if I drive conservatively, it goes directly up to 17.6. It never jumps one-tenth at a time. I really couldn't care less if it does that, but that didn't happen in my 02 Durango, and if it's broke, I might as well have them fix it.

Do any of these sound like something to worry about? Any ideas of other things to look out for? I plan on taking it in tomorrow to have the DVD player looked at and to transfer the 7/70 powertrain warranty into my name.

Thanks for your time.

DO check the inside pads. They can be worn more than the outer ones. If so, make sure you lubricate the slider pins when you reassemble with new pads.

2) Sometimes when I start it up in the morning, the engine fan runs real loud until I get up to speed. The same thing happened with my 02 Durango R/T, so I assume it's nothing to worry about?

My 01 does this also, especially when it is cold out. It's the fan clutch taking few moments to decide that the fan is not needed.

3) The power steering fluid is at the minimum mark. I don't see any sign of leakage, unless it was cleaned off by the dealer I bought it from (a Toyota dealer).

Sounds ok, but just for giggles take a good look at the boots on each end of the steering rack. Mine was seeping on the passenger side at 32k. Since this is a pricey repair, you want it fixed under warranty if there is even a slight leak.

I don't think any of these readouts are right on. Sounds like yours is 'in the ballpark" which is par for the course.

While you're at it, if your spark plugs have not been done, they should be every 30k. Also, xfer case, tranny, and both front and rear axles should have new fluids at 30k.

Don

I would have the suspension checked. These are heavy trucks and heavy vehicles tend to put a lot of strain on suspension components. It may be in good shape, but I would check it anyway.

The fan 'roar' you hear when starting cold is normal. There is a viscous fan clutch that takes a couple of seconds to start freewheeling when cold. Nothing to worry about there. Conversely, I had the same roar at speed when towing a camper up a steep grade in the mountains. At 4000 rpm it really makes a lot of noise, but the temp gauge drops quickly, so it is effective.

Hope this helps,

Jeff
