Changing rear axle fluid in '04 Durango
Hi guys,
I am now to this forum, and sorry for having posted this message earlier in the wrong section.
I bought a used2004 Durango and want to change axle fluids.
Shall I disassemble Watt linkage from the diff cover on the rear axle or only move the cover aside?
Is there any gasket under the cover?
Thanks in advance.
Wishing you a Happy New Year,
Alex

How many miles on your rig?? The diffs should be serviced every 30k unless you tow alot and then I would make it 20k.
Unless you have a reason to think there are issues inside, just pump the old stuff out and pump the new in. IIRC, the there is no gasket, just RTV to seal it.
Use a good synthetic such as Mobil 1 or Royal Purple. Amsoil is also good, just a bit more money.

Hi Don,
Thank you for your reply. The car has only 35,000 miles on it. It looks and rides great and emits no suspicious noise, but because I am not sure about its condition, I'd like to remove the over and clean the inside. I wonder if I can do it without disassembling the linkages mouned on the cover. I have ordered a Haynes Repair Manual from Amazon but it will arrive in February at the soonest.

SinceI have a Gen 1, I can't say if the linkage has to come off or not. I would think that it just unbolts. At 35k, unless you are having issues I would be inclined to leave her sealed up. Mine is at 67k, and has never had the cover off. I have serviced it 2 times. Next time will be 90k.

Alex, PLEASE, take it from someone who is spending the first week of 2008 without a vehicle, I have an 03 D with TRANSMISSION FAIL so, from someone who is learning the hardway, I say unless it is binding, grindingor acting upjust remove and replace the fluid.
Dear Listmates,
Thank you for your input and warnings.Idefinitely must remove the cover, and a clear description of this procedure is found in alldatadiy.com. Don, you are right, the Watts link unbolts.
Now I must buy a new replacement bolt and wait until the weather gets a bit warmer: the night temperature goes down to -15 deg C in my garage!
There is no rush with this because my01 Grand Caravan is still with me.
