Turned out to be valve spring
Ok, so I posted a little while ago about a large vaccuum leak. Well, Our 05 Durango, which we just purchased, has been in the shop for a week and a half now. The dealer called me Friday and told me that they couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. It won't idle, smells like it is flooding, and once they get it up to 4000 rpm, it runs as it should. So they say it doesn't have clogged catalytic converters because it wouldn't run at any rpm range if it had but they can't figure it out because it is not throwing any codes out at all to tell them what is wrong. Basically it is running the same as it was before they replaced the intake manifold gasket that they said had blown. I beginning to think there was nothing wrong with the gasket and they just can't figure it out. If you keep the gassed pressed at low idle it shakes all over the place and you can smell the gas. This is rediculous. Anybody have this happen to them and does anyone have any guesses I can pass along to the dealer? Broken valve or valve springs? it's the 5.7 hemi and has 36000 miles on it. Very frustrated to hear the dealer say THEY CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT!
REV:
Sorry to hear you are having these issues with your new ride. BTW, is this a Dodge or Chrysler dealer you are working with??
The valve spring issue you spoke of has been a real problem for quite a few folks on the Hemi motor. Have they had the valve covers off to visually inpsect the valvetrain????
Although you don't want to upset your local dealer if you can help it, I would think you might want to start moving up the ladder a bit and contact a zone rep.
If one cylinder is not firing correctly, that would explain the smell of fuel and the rough idle at low RPM.
Keep the pressure on in a polite but firm fashion. Hopefully they will find the problem or replace the engine.
You might even consider seeing if they will buy it back. I myself would want some type of warranty from them after all these issues if I was going to hang on to it.

*UPDATE*
Well, finally got the Rango Back. It did indeed broke a valve spring and dropped a valve. It bent the valve guide. They had ordered a whole new head and replaced everything. It now runs like a top and we just put a new 12 inch roof mount dvd player in and it looks awesome....we are happy campers again and love a Rango! Thanks to all that replied!
