Default Hemi strange sound question

OK, I am not sure what to search so I am just putting this question out there. My Durango is making a strange noise and I am not sure what it is.

I should note that my truck is an 06 and therefore has the MDS system.

While driving at a constant speed (therefore almost no pressure on the throttle) and then wanting to accelerate just a little, if I only give a little pressure to the throttle, the exhaust note (engine note?) changes to something that almost sounds like it is pinging (pre-detonation). I do not think that is the problem, but it is kind of what is sounds like.

Under mild acceleration, or harder acceleration, no hint of this sound. If the car is making this sound, and then I give it more gas, the sound goes away. If I take my foot out of it, no sound either.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Steve

I can tell you from experience, there is no such thing as pre-detonation. If it's pinging, its detonating. I would check for an EGR problem, or even an exhaust leak. Or even both, if the EGR tube from the exhaust to the valve is leaking. Since you have MDS, it could be something with that, though I'm not familiar enough with the little nuances of that system to say for sure.

My 2007 hemi w/MDS does exact same sound too, like a pinging sound, similiar to if the timing was out. I've put in 91 octane fuel in to see if the pinging sound goes away, I usually fill up with 87 octane.

Higher octane fuel will solve detonation problems as bluedodgeram stated,

I have not tried higher-octane gas. I will be happy to do so.

Shortly after I posted this, my check engine light came on. I researched the problem, and it told me that my egr valve was the issue. The light would come and go. Anyway, After it had been on for a couple days, I ordered an egr and a gasket online. The stuff arrived 4 days later, and my engine check light has not come back on since (this has been since February now) so I have not changed the egr yet.

Steve:

From what I have heard, the EGR valve seems to be an issue on the 5.7 motor. I wonder if Dodge had a bad run of parts in the 04-06 era as our 05 Grand Caravan needed one at ~45k. As far as I know, my 04 5.7 still has its factory egr.
