Question Please Help

I've been searching the threads left and right and can't seem to get the exact answer I am looking for within my results.

Here's what I recently purchased: 04 Durango Limited 4.7L V8 without the tow package and a 3.55 gear ratio. It does have a Transmission and Power Steering Oil Cooler, which from what I've read is standard on all V8's.

Now my question. What is my tow capacity on this vehicle. All the charts I find seem to indicate the tow capacity is 2000lbs without the tow package, but I can't believe that's all this would safely haul.

Thanks in advance!

Todd

The search function is your friend. Just posted a complete towing capacity list for the D here 2 weeks ago.

Default Thanks INDY, you're a big help

Is this to what you were referring? It was posted by you roughly two weeks ago regarding the 2003 Durango. Perhaps if the original message header didn't misspell DURANGO as DURANGE, I wouldn't have had so much trouble finding it well before I posted my original question.

Now let's take a look at this chart...hmm, let's see I see the 4.7L. Ah, there's the 4WD with a 3.55 gear ratio. Ok...now 2004....hmmm, uh I don't see it! Looks like this is only for the 2003. Perhaps I didn't see this post before because it isn't what I am looking for. You see...I have a 2004 Durango, 4.7 L, 3.55 GR, 4WD.

As stated in the first sentence of my post; I've searched the forums over and over to no avail. Now I have more information that I don't need. Could someone just type 4 accurate numbers for my towing capacity, please. I really do not need replies that only tell me to do what I've already said and done.

Durango 2WD 5.9L V-8 (f) 5850

Durango 4WD 4.7L V-8 (g) 5700
Durango 4WD 5.9L V-8 (f) 5600
Durango 4WD 5.9L V-8 (g) 7300

(f) 3.55 axle ratio
(g) 3.92 axle ratio

2003 ratings were reduced from 2002 ratings partially based on Government regs. If the above works for your needs, the 2002 will meet or exceed those figures.

Yep you found it. I didn't have the name wrong and I can't fix other peoples mistakes. Sorry about that. I gave you my name and the approx timeline from when I posted it so you could (obviously) find it without a lot of effort.

Yep you are also right that the details stopped with the end of the Gen1. Sorry about that too. I didn't recall that all I had posted was Gen1 data. Didn't mean to send you on a wild goose chase or to be a dick about it. Really!!

The detail came from Trailer Boats magazine. They do a yearly review of all towing capacities as well as the details. With that said, have you checked your glove box? I would be shocked to find out the manual doesn't provide you details as to your towing capacity ranges.

I'll search for more info from the web. If I find it, I'll post it for you.

Here it is. The 2004 should match the 2006:
http://www.trailerboats.com/images/e...6045_tow06.pdf

Depending on the setup, the 4x4 is between 5700 - 8650 pounds. Your setup is rated at 5700.

Regardless of YOUR obvious heavy sarcasm above, I am HTH and won't reciprocate in busting your *****. It was easy data to find and could actually help others here too. YW. Next time perhaps a better response would have been warranted towards a solo responder (on any thread) considering so many other people chimed in here in the thread to help you just as I did.

IndyD <--- kept it clean and controlled. LOL.

I found that site and used the 2004 guide prior to posting. There is a disclaimer in that version that says that the values given are ONLY for the tow package equipped, otherwise 2000 lbs. I never thought to check a later version to see if it changed.

Perhaps the question I really need answered here is what the heck did the tow package include? The 3.92 GR was a $40 separate option, so I believe you could have the 3.55 with the tow package. Were the brakes/tranny cooler/PS cooler also beefed? Or did they just throw their hitch and wiring on it and call it an easy $455? (You see...I really have been searching)

Yes, my reply was drenched with sarcasm. Right or wrong, it came from your immediate assumption that I had not already used the search feature. I made a point to clearly state that I had in my first sentence so that I didn't get responses telling me to use the search feature.

I am new to this forum, but not to forums in general. I know to do my searching prior to asking a question and tried to state that to avoid the initial response that you gave me. Bust my ***** all you want...I'll welcome it...hell, punch me in the face...if I can just get this answered. I've already lost 3+ hours of my life searching for it.

I'm fairly sure I'm worrying about nothing as my boat can't weigh more than 2700lbs wet, but with that damned 2000lbs w/o the tow package disclaimer, I just wanted to be sure. The 2006 sheet you linked definitely makes me feel better about it as I can not find the same 2004 disclaimer I previously mentioned in the 2006 version.

Thanks for taking the time to help...and I'll try to play nice now in hopes that you recognize that I really have tried to make my own, unassisted effort.

It's all good Todd!! Welcome and stick around. I like you. You can take a punch AND come back respectful and not cocky. Really... it's all good.

If you need any help, let me know and I'll do my best to help.

2004-2006 should all be the same.
2007-2009s should be the same but not necessarily the same as the 2006 and down.

IIRC, the tow package included the hitch of course, a transmission cooler, an oil cooler and different rear end gears. That's it for a difference I think. If you want to tow a lot, get coolers attached and get a really good class III or a standard class IV hitch and you'll be fine. Overdrive OFF for towing.

I learned the OD "OFF" thing the hard way, trust me, it won't happen again. Was towing maybe 1800 lbs from Sacramento to Ohio in my 92 Regal Grand Sport only to get left on I80 in No Where, Nebraska with a shot transmission. Ugh, worst day of my life. Aurora, Nebraska...I hate you.

I do have 3 add'l coolers in front of the radiator. As far as I can tell, they're Tranny, Power Steering and A/C Compressor. Not sure if that's where the oil cooler would be located. I read somewhere that those were standard on all of the V8 Durangos at least 2nd Gen ones. Do you know if they provided a beefier one with the tow package? I can always throw a beefier one on if I need to, I'd just like to know before I find out I need to, if you know what I mean.

It's a fairly flat tow from here to the ports of Lake Erie, but I'm about 2 hours away...I imagine I'll be fine....but an ounce of prevention is better than $3k of cure.

What do you know about the sway bars on this thing? I think my bushings need replaced as the rear end doesn't seem to care too much for our crappy roads here in Ohio. Clunking and loss of traction around a bumpy corner. Can't seem to find any poly replacement bushings for it anywhere. Hell, rubber ones are a bit tough to come by.
