Thrown Rod - Trashed Block - Help!!!
Ok, so I go to start my 04 Durango SLT w/ 5.7L Hemi last Friday and as soon as I do it starts thrashing from side to side. Instantly shut it down thinking that I've got a cat caught under the hood. Pop it and get out and go start to raise the hood. As I'm standing there fidgeting with the latch I see oil start to run down the driveway. I look under to see a steady stream of oil pouring out from the middle of my oil pan. On closer look its coming from a square hole that I can tell is punched from the inside out.
So Saturday I spend the better part of the day taking down the oil pan. They did not make this an easy task for someone without a full garage and a lift.
I finally get it off and find the front drive side piston rod dangling there and about a dozen pieces of block in the oil pan. I finally find that it’s the oiler channel that’s formed into the block that runs between the cam and crank shaft that’s been destroyed. I figure that the rod let loose, went over the top, smashed the oiler, then came around and punched two holes in my oil pan before getting it shut down..
So I've searched and searched for a new or reman block, a complete pull from a wrecked unit, and every possible option in between. Found pricing from $1600 for a complete pull to $3000 for a reman long block with a 3 year warranty.
So...
#1 Does anyone have any leads or suggestions on where I could find a pull or reman at a better price, preferably in the North Texas Area?
#2 Is anyone else aware of this happening unexpectedly on any other Hemi's or other Durango engines from the second generation model? Mine was running perfect until this happened.
Thanks for any help y'all can lend.
