Rear axle replacement 06 Durango
Just got my dodge back after three days at dealership They never called me once I was the one to always call them like they have you held captive. I have had this vehicle since it had 17,000 miles on it and now has 57,000 not bad for taking care of it not driving it long distances. About two months ago heard a thumping sound and thought it was a new tire that was messed up and spent 250.00 dollars for mechanic's to tell me that it's the axle and they can't fix it the dealer will have to that cost me 2,000.00 dollars. I used to think that this vehicle was going to last forever now I don't think that any more. The dealership said because I was not the original owner there was nothing they could do for me they will never get my business ever again from my company or me and during these hard times I would at least think that someone could at least look into it. I have a chevy 08 with 79,000 miles on it and have never had a problem with it and for what I have done to that truck it's amazing that it still works. My wife drives like my mother in-law and she goes through a rear end. I don't get it.
One might wonder exactly how your Mother-In-Law drives? Sorry, I couldn't resist that.
I have had good luck in talking directly to Chrysler. Perhaps you should've tried that, and bypassed the dealer, before the work got done. However, now that it is done, you might want to give them a call still. 57K miles and the axle goes out is not normal, not even close. They may agree to reimburse you for part of your costs.

What would cause the axle to need to be replaced so soon? Did they tell you?
For less than $250 you could find one at a junk yard. NO WAY would I spend $2000 on just that. Dealer is raping you on install fees would be my guess.
Good luck with it. Keep us posted.

what is actually wrong? the differential? the bearings? I doubt its a broken shaft. The dealer will just say its the axle and charge you for the whole thing rather then fix whats actually broken. Could be an easy fix. Might pay to find out, in this economy.
