Honestly, the V6 is not powerful enough to haul this large SUV. The V6 got terrible reviews from 'Car and Driver', but they praised the V8's,

+1, I can't imagine the 4.7 in this thing, much less the 6'er. I will vouch for the safety of the 2nd gens. Last Valentine's Day, my wife was hit broadside in the drivers side. It threw her into a curb, damn near flipping the truck on its side (according to witnesses). A lotta damage, but all-n-all the wife was "ok".

Heres a link to my original thread on it, for what its worth....

Rent one first... even for just a weekend.

+3 on the V6. I rented a 2006 Gen2 with the 4.7 and was extremely unsatisfied with the power. Here was my writeup/review of the Gen2 I rented.

Take a moment and do a few things first:

1. Don't go with the V6, very underpowered. If you want the fuel economy go with the 5.7L Hemi. It's a multi-displacement engine that will give you all the power you need and the fuel economy the V-6 has. It turns into a 4 cylinder once you get it up to cruising speed and if you need the power, .08 seconds till the other 4 cylinders kick in. Trust me, very, very, very nice.

2. Check the truck you buy for recalls. These do have a recall on them that causes the Dashboard to catch fire. If the recall is done they are great, if not, don't park it in your garage until it is done.

3. Take the Durango, before you buy it, and have the dealer fill up the tank. Yes, make them fill it up, no fill up, no sale stance on this. Why? Because the 2005 Durangos have a recall that costs $800+ to fix, they spray fuel out of the tank after the pump shuts off when filling them, not a little overflow, a literal spray of gas all over you if you happen to be standing there. Shoots out a couple feet. To test, make sure the tank is close to empty (less than a 1/4 tank in it) and take it over for a fill up. Set the pump so it's locked to the on position and step away from the truck, a few feet behind it is a good spot to be. Then just wait, when the pump shuts off wait a couple more seconds, if she sprays the fuel tell the dealer they either put a whole new fuel tank assembly in the truck or you walk away. Keep in mind, you'll want your own car with you and let the dealer drive it back if it does spray the fuel, because the inside of that truck is going to reak of gasoline for a few minutes.

Keep in mind, I have an 06 Durango Limited with the Hemi in it, I love this truck and after a few calls to Dodge and the threat of creating a Video of the truck spraying it's gas Dodge stepped in and fixed it on their dime. But they will not issue a recall on these as of yet.

I live in the snow belt of Ohio, this truck is 100% sure footed in AWD mode, don't even have to kick it into 4WD Lock. The rear climate control, my kids complain it gets to warm and I have to turn it down, we all know how hard it is to heat the back of a large vehicle, but the Durango does it. Satellite radio, GPS, Video Entertainment System, Adjustable Pedals, Heated Power Seats and oh so many other things make this truck an amazing vehicle to drive.

My opinion: Up your budget a little if you can and go for the Limited with the Hemi. It looks and drives much better than the 06 ST that your looking at. Yes, the price gives away which version your looking at, and you will also find the Limited holds it's price alot better. If you can't get up to the Limited in your budget, at a minimum go with the SLT and the Hemi. You'll get all the power of the Limited and only give up some creature comforts.

And just so you know: I paid $15,990 for my 06 Limited in early November with 41K miles on it. Hope that helps you see the value comparison.
