Default Airbag Calibration Cosst?

I had my 04 Durango to the dealer today to check out some codes, one having to do with the airbag light on. I was told the sensor in the passenger seat shows the weight at -11 lbs and it should be a +1 lb. The solution, they said, will be to calibrate the seat/sensor by putting weights on the seat. When asked how much this would cost, they said more diagnostic is needed before quoting a price.

Well, cool, my checkbook is so fat, take your time. Yah, right!! Seriously, is more diagnostic really needed and about how much should I expect the calibration to cost?

Thanks much,

kenn

Do you really care that the seat sensor is faulty? Cut the damn wire under the seat/at the belt and move on. As long as the airbag still works, no problems.

Wifey's FJ Crusier has that sensor to make sure the seatbelt is used. It is a pain in the *** when you carry anything up front n the pass seat OTHER than a person. LOL

My dogs set my wifes Trailbazer seat belt annoying ding off when I take them to the woods in the morning. I would calibrate it as it could effect the performance of the airbag if you are in a collision as it deploys depending on the weight on the seat (a 50 kid compared to a 250 pound man),

YES, I do!! It would be one thing if I planed on driving it into the ground but at some point, I will trade or sell it. I don't mind cutting a corner here or there but this is one corner I will not "cut", pun intended.

Thanks for your response,

There are a few other issues, no cruise control and CD, and from what I can determine they are all connected with the clockspring so I'll change that first and go from there. Along with that, the Dodge dealer said they would need more diagnostic time before they could give me a price on calibration even though they were the ones who said it was a calibration problem.

Thank you for your reply,

Actually it is a big deal the calibration dictates the force used to deploy the airbags meaning its going to take more to stop a 300 pound person than a 80 pound kid so if its not calibrated and you have a smaller person ie a petite woman or teen and the bags deploy set to stop a large man it can kill them.

I did not know this either until recently when I had to get an out of province inspection and the previous owner had tinkered with swapping out seats and the red airbag light was on causing an instant fail. I blew it off at first too but because I had to fix it I looked into it and found out how important it is. Scary I had my son sitting there
