Default Broken fuel tank nipple?

Hi everyone, I am new here, but in desperate need of some help!

I drive a 2007 Chrysler Aspen 2wd with Hemi. Have 44k miles on it and have never had any problems except for the stupid Check Engine Light and Gascap alert. Here is the history:

About 2 months ago, the check engine light came on. Took car to Autozone and read code- P0456. Went to dealer and got new gascap. Reset computer. 3 days later, light back on. Went back to Autozone, same code. Reset Computer (figured gas cap wasn't on tightly). 2 days later- light back on. After rechecking gas cap and resetting computer a few more times, finally took car to dealer. They charged me $115 and said they replaced a module that was triggering the code. (They ran a smoke test and nothing showed up leaking). Dealer reset the computer and lights were off.

3 days later, check engine light and "gascap" is showing again. Took car back to Autozone. Codes showing are P0440, P0456, P0457. Take care back to dealer because they obviously didn't "fix" the problem. Dealer now tells me that the fuel tank's nipple is cracked and that is what is causing the problem and it is going to cost $780 for a new fuel tank.

So, first of all, I am not really confident in the dealer's assessments since they said the first smoke test came out fine with no leaks. I am debating on taking the car to a different, local mechanic shop to have them do a smoke test, but that will put me out another $100.

Anybody have any suggestions? Anyway to fix this fuel tank issue without getting a new fuel tank (assuming that is actually the problem)?

If you need a different tank, go to a junk yard for the part. Or www.LKQonline.com.

No reason to buy brand new or from the stealer. Any local shop can install it for about $100-$125
