2004 Durango and towing
I am looking at buying an 04 Durango. I will be using it for a hauling around the family and a 3500lb camper trailer.
The one I am looking at has a hitch on it, have seen it close enough to know if it has the 7 pin connector I will need.
My questions are:
1. Is the 4.7 up to towing a 3500lb camper?
2. With 80k miles on it are there issues I should worry about?
3. What do I look for to make sure I have a factory tow package vs. a hitch just added? I have read here that the standard gears are 3.55 and an optional 3.92. I would prefer the 3.92s but would the 3.55 be sufficient? What about other coolers (trans or oil coolers).
4. What kind of gas mileage are you getting with the Durango? My current tow vehicle gets about 13. I am not expecting miracles here but hoping for over 15 mpg.
I don't go very far with the trailer but often the spaces are tight and I have to do allot of backing and maneuvering. Using an equalizer hitch is out of the question.
My current vehicle is a dodge full size conversion van. We love it because of the size and we hat it because it is so big, but it has been an excellent tow vehicle. My previous tow vehicle was a Grand Cherokee and it was a horrid tow vehicle. For larger trailer I have a ¾ ton Ford truck. It is a beast but not very comfortable for the family, it is a single cab.
I have done some searching on this forum. Most who tow seem to have the hemi. I am not towing far and not up steep mountian roads.

When I initially searched I only found info on 2010 and 2011, thanks for the link. So other than a hitch and a seven pin connector was there more to the trailer package such as extra coolers or do all SLTs have that equipment automatically.
I just found out the one I am looking at does not have the factory tow package.
What I am having issues finding out if the “towing package” include more than just a hitch and plug. If that is it, than it is a simple fix.
Is there is a place I can plug in a harness for the 7 pin or will it be more complicated than that. The Durango that I am looking at does have a class 3 hitch already mounted (not factory) a 4 pin connector and no control module for trailer brakes.

My wife's 05 has the tow package it has the heavy duty fan and a trans cooler,(Heavy duty service group) and factory hitch class IV, with 7 pin and 4 pin plug, and wired for brake control, 6 x 9 power fold-away mirrors, it has the 4.7 V8 SOHC magnum (R) engine.. these Item's are what you should look for if you want to tow with a 4.7
