Default Ignition cylinder

Does anyone have a problem with their ignition cylinder where the key will not turn? I noticed that if I have the wheel turn slightly to the left (offcenter) the key will turn with no hesitation in the ignition. Straight ahead and the key is 'locked' out and will not move and sometimes a minute later......key turn and it starts right up with no problem. Well, went to the post office and I forgot to cant the wheel off center and it can not be towed since I can not put it in nuetral. Too wide and heavy for a dolly and the flat bed can not get it off once they winch it on. A locksmith wants $300.00 to rebuild the ignition to which I am out of warranty and out of luck with a tow......might have to trade it in for the third generation Durango....

Is the wheel locked? As I know sometimes that when the wheel gets locked you can't turn the ignition. To make light of the situation you could always hot-wire it.......

Could be nothing.

Could be worn tumbler.

Could be binding that is relieved when turning the wheel.

Check it in different places (different parking lots, etc.) If it continues in the same places, zeros in on the binding issue.

My Wifey's 08 FJ does it too. As long as it doesn't get worse, run with it.

It is being replaced today. The slider is worn and the locksmith has to rebuid it or replace it with an OEM midel which he will cut to use my set of keys. It started off doing it once a month or so to once a day to everytime unless I had the wheel turned slightly off center. Not too bad for a four year old car after the bad gas tank and peeling grille,

My 2005 Dodge Durango LTD has now had this problem twice. The first time it happened, it left my wife and kids stranded in a parking lot. The cylinder was replaced and it worked fine - for less than a year! Now I am having the same problem again. Checking online, it seems fairly common with Dodge vehicles.
