Default Transmission Question

2006 Durango, no shift lever - something snapped and found a small plastic & metal piece on the floor mat. Dealer is telling me I need a valve body ? This sounds fishy since what broke seems to be under the dash?
Can anyone out there offer insite?

Unless it is under warranty, I would stay away from the dealer,

Pugs:

That diagnosis does sound bogus. Find a helper, and have them sit in the driver seat with the engine off and key in run. Put the parking brake on and "chock" a wheel on both sides.

While you lie down from under and observe the trans linkage, have the helper move the column shifter from park down to low, then back again.

If you see movement down under, then I would feel better about there possibly being an internal trans issue. If there is no movement, FIND another shop and hopefully they will take care of you!
