You'll probably get a bit more help starting a new thread; But were all here to help so Welcome. The red lightning bolt is the electronic throttle warning light indicating something wrong with the throttle. If the PCV valve is bad it could cause oil consumption and all that gunk gets sucked out the valve into the throttle body gumming it up. Start with the PCV valve and do a good throttle body cleaning. Youll be amazed how dirty that thing gets.

For all, I stand corrected. I took my wifes words out of context yesterday. The problem did not recur after I put that 1/2 quart of oil in it 2 days ago. I checked the oil when I got home yesterday from work, and it was still full after she had made 2 errand runs yesterday within the neighborhood. After checking my oil, I checked my radiator to make sure it was not getting into the cooling system, but nothing.

I 'found' the PCV valve, however haven't decided if I 'know' how to remove it. It looks like the sensor is built into the valve. There is also a plastic or metal tube maybe 8 inches long coming off the back of the valve running rearwards. I can't tell what it goes to back there.

It looks like to remove the valve I have to remove the oil filler (top portion) to have good access to it, disconnect the sensor connector, and pull 2 spring tabs, but I'm not sure about that tube running off the back of it.

Any help? Again, 2008 Durango, 4x4 Auto Hemi Limited. Thanks again for any comments.

hillbilli, thank you. And if you think I should start a new thread, I will.

For all,

Sorry, had located the wrong thing calling it the PCV valve...actually found it now. Will inspect it this weekend, but from much reading online and in the forums, and further thinking about the events and how it all unfolded, I'm thinking now it has more to do with my Throttle Body and PCV valve than anything. I think the oil being low when it happened the first time was just a result from it being quite a while since the oil was serviced as now I've been reading, I don't think my Durango is equipped with any kind of special engine shutoff feature if the oil gets low.

But, when all is said and done this weekend I will let everyone know for future reference what the problem was.

Thanks. And anymore input is still welcome.

Dave

BVM:

I run and prefer synthetic oil for its better cold flow ability in our cold Ohio winters as well as the longer service intervals.

I am currently running Mobil 1 in both my 04 Hemi Durango as well as the wife's 05 3.8 Grand Caravan.
Both are on a 6 month /4K mile service interval. Typically, I will have to add 1 quart to the van and my Durango might be a half a quart down at the 4K mark. Not enough to worry about in my opinion.

i use the Durango mainly for motorway(freeway) driving, so after a 1,500 mile trip i usually have to top up the oil, somewhere between a pint and a quart. there is no deposits on the exhaust and it does not smoke, only has 52k on the clock which is genuine

When i had the LPG system serviced last year the technician told me the computer he uses showed that there was a small oil leak, and not to worry about it, (my scanner never picked up this code) as nearly all the cars/vans etc that he services show the same code, and he just cleared it.
But when i get back home i will check the PCV and Throttle body.
Just going to change oil and filter today. It seems the filters i use are different to normal OEM''s i use Wix 51515 which are slightly longer than the standard Wix filters normally used for 5.7 hemi. On a foot note to this, i'm going to have to use 5W-30 synthetic as it is almost impossible to get 5W-20 anywhere here in Europe

Not sure if you are running synthetic or not but if you are I would switch back. Talked to several good mechanics about it and all stated some engines are like that and just dont like the synthetic.

what oil did you use then I wanna try that you use conventional or did you use a high mileage or what? And what brand?
