Cylinder #5 misfire
I'm having the exact same issue. One day my 06 Durango started missing really bad and then the check engine light came on. It came up as Cylinder 5 misfire. Took it in for tune up, got new plugs and new coil installed. At this time, I was well under the 80K warranty. It ran a little better but still not great for a couple of weeks and then the check engine light came on again. Again cylinder 5. My husband switched the coil on 5 with the one on 7. 4 days later, the light came on again for cylinder 5. We then cleaned the injectors and the light came again. Took it to different place to be checked and were told that we needed to take it to a dealer because the "computer" was causing the misfires. I then took it to a dealership and told them everything that had been done up to this point. They took a look and told me one of the injectors had shut down and I needed to replace the ignition coil on cylinder 5. I again told them what had been done and said I was not replacing any more coils. I asked if they had physically checked the injector to verify it was not working. They assured me they had and were not just relying on the diagnostics. So I let them replace that. They then call and say that the light is still on and it is being caused by bad PCM and it needs to be replaced. I do have an extended warranty on this vehicle but they are useless and I'm wondering if I take it in to the place I bought it, if they will say it was covered. I was told by the Dodge dealership there was no way to tell what caused the PCM to fail but I'm at the point now where I don't believe what anyone tells me so I don't know what to do next. I'm tired of spending $500 everytime I take it somewhere only to have the light pop back up a few days later. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.
Joanna:
What engine does your D have, and how many miles?
Sounds like the folks who have worked on it need a bit of pressure to get the issue diagnosed and repaired properly.
Regarding your extended warranty, while a number of them do not cover much, may I ask what company yours is with? Your contract should define what the policy will and will not cover.

Don,
Thanks for replying. I have a 5.7 Hemi with 88K miles and based on the very ambiguous language in the warranty it appears it should be covered. However, the place I am required to take it has already screwed me over once by lying about what the problem was. This time I already have a Dodge dealership telling me the PCM needs to be replaced and that there is not really a way to determine the cause of why it failed, but I'm just worried they will try and say it was caused by me and therefore not covered. However, it has to be fixed because it is running terribly so I will just have to fight them on this. Thanks again.

I would get the dealership's diagnosis on paper (an estimate or whatever it takes), and take that to your warranty place and be polite, but forceful, that they need to take care of it.
Another place to look for a new PCM is through LKQ. They sell new and salvaged parts. Google LKQ and you will get their website. Fair warning, their customer service sucks and the people who answer have no people skills.
