truck ran fantastic yesterday, today upon starting ran rough, loud ticking coming from engine, check engine light on and off, vibration during acceleration. fluid levels are good. no leaks on ground.

On and off usually means misfires. As red_hemi suggested, take it to an auto parts store. They will read your codes for free. Don't necessarily listen to what they say the codes mean, just write down the actual codes themselves and post them here.
pull the codes, key to on (no start) 3 times in a row quickly, look at the odometer, it will say Pxxxx (xxxx for a series of numbers) these are what codes are being tripped. go to the sticky in the forum and look up the codes. no need to go to a store to pull the codes.
that will give you an idea of what could be wrong. it does sound like a missfire but easier to tell with the right code.
good luck.

Don:
What engine and how many miles on your D?
An exhaust leak which both the 4.7 nd 5.7 engine are known for will usually quiet down as the engine warms up.
I do not think this is your issue though as an exhaust leak will not cause engine missfire as indicated by the flashing CE light.
IF you have the 5.7, take this issue seriously as a fair number of 04 units and a few 05 units experienced catastrophic failure due to bad valve springs.
There was also an issue with rod/crank clearance that eventually results in a rod exiting the side of the block.
With the valvespring issue, the spring fractures and the attendant valve drops into its cylinder destroying the engine.
Do not delay on this as an engine replacement runs $4-$7k depending on whether your go back in with a used, rebuilt, or new engine.
