troubleshooting mopar remote start
I searched through the threads but didn't find what I am looking for. I have a 2007 Durango (purchased used). It came with a mopar add on remote start. It worked fine when I got it about a year ago, but recently, it malfunctions fairly consistently. When I press it twice to start it, I get a honk/flash, then it will start and run for about 5 seconds then shut down, then about 10 seconds later will start again and shut down after 5 seconds. IT will do that until I hit the brake. One thing that has always been peculiar is that even when it did work, the security light would flash at me after putting the key in and would keep flashing for about a minute or two before going off. I didn't think much of it since everything worked fine, but perhaps that meant something is wrong. Does anyone know where I can find a manual to diagnose this problem or has any ideas where to start? Every now and then, it will actually work correctly. A few times I have also had it fail to start and it sets the alarm off.
Nevermind. I fixed it. There is a hood switch (gravity switch) mounted near the driver side hood hinge. First I made sure that was working...if it is, the car should not start at all with the hood up and will start with it down. I then traced those wires through the firewall to a remote starter black box crammed up under the space below the steering wheel. There are three flat plugs and one small 2 pin plug connected to the box. I unplugged all of them and then reconnected everything securely and now it seems to be working fine. One of the connections must have been bad. I hope this helps someone out with the same problem.
