2005 Durango downshifts hard
While driving my 2005 Durango, I notice that when slowing down from about 50 mph, it downshifts really hard when it gets to about 40 mph or so. It happens when I am off the accelerator and before hitting the brake, like cruising when preparing to come to a red light. The opposite does not occur when accelerating. It shifts fine getting up to speed.

Check the fluid level, color and grity-ness.
If its low, fill it to the proper level.
If the fluid is anything but red, change it and the filters.
If the fluid feels grity, time to change it.
Now, if it isn't one of the above, check out allpar.com. My Stratus was doing the same thing only at 30mph. It ended up being the soleniod shift pack which on the 4TE1 in the stratus, was 113 shipped to my door and took an hour to replace from start to finish. Not sure about the durango, but you're describing something very similar to what I went through on the stratus. Check the allpar site and follow it step by step.
If you find out the issue, let us know what is is. Good luck.

I have a 2005 DD, 4.7, 2WD, Auto that started the exact same problem last week. When cruising around 50mph, it will shift out of OD, then within a couple seconds, go to 2nd gear. I found that if I then "rev" it in that gear over 3k RPM's, it'll go back into OD like its supposed to. Its very annoying. My DD threw a check engine light when this happened, however, its a false reading for its showing a TPS problem (if you read my previous threads, TPS CEL's are all I've been getting, having sensor issues).
I did buy the OBD2 bluetooth reader that works w/ the Torque app on my android, and I do have failures when testing for the EGR (which I suspected all along). I am not sure if my EGR problem just happens to run parallel w/ my same trans problem you have, but something to consider. Do you have a check engine light on as well??
If I find the problem, I'll post it here for sure. Its very annoying, and sometimes when starting my normal accelerations in the morning, it will NOT get out of first, and hover over 3k RPM's until I "gas it" again...ugh...
Let me know if you find the problem too. I am actively trying myself, maybe two heads on this are better than one!!!
I know, right!! I plan to re-replace my current TPS, and if it works, I need to hunt down WHY my TPS keeps going out. Luckily, its a lifetime warranty on them. One thing though, this TPS is a "Standard" brand...thinking of getting my $ back, and maybe getting MOPAR...anyone have thoughts on that?
i am having the same issue as the original poster, anyone come up with a diagnosis or solution?
