Default Newbee Front Drive Shaft Question

I need to replace / rebuild the front drive shaft on my 2006 Durango. I removed the 4 bolts at the yoke end, dropped the shaft and tried to slide the other end out of the transfer case but I cant seem to get enough clearance to slide the splines all the way out. Tried different angles for 30 - 40 minutes . got frustrated and had to rebolt the yoke end back together.

Am I missing something - HELP

Default Front prop shaft pic

Attached is a picture of the prop shaft I'm trying to remove
from my Durango. As i stated earlier, the u-joint end unbolts easily but
it doesnt seem to drop down enough to get clearance to slide the shaft
out from the t-case. ( it hits frame cross member )

i'm probably missing something simple

Any Ideas

Never tried, but the Service manual Doesn't says anything special about it. Did you remove the protection crossmember right below the front end? My only guess is if you have your truck rised from the ground (mostly sure), may be the front end is lower and gets in the middle of the shaft way out. you could get another jack and rise the front end to make some space.

This is the procedure to removal in the Service manual (lacks the remove cross member part, that comes in the front axle removal chapter but might help)

SHAFT-PROPELLER FRONT REMOVAL
1. With vehicle in neutral, position vehicle on hoist.
2. Remove skid plate if equipped.
3. Mark a reference line across propeller shaft flange and pinion flange.
4. Remove exhaust crossover bolts from exhaust manifolds and lower crossover.
5. Remove boot clamp from CV joint.
6. Remove pinion flange bolts.
7. Slide propeller shaft off the transfer case and remove shaft.

Good luck

Default Thanks LONEWOLF2007

Yeah, think thats what I'm missing
The exhaust crossover
Too bad, those bolts look pretty rusted
might need to be cut off

Oh, well - maybe have to go to the dealer

Its a shame there isnt a simple way to
remove and replace the front prop shaft
on the 2nd gen Durango

Maybe I'll give it a try

Thanks for your help

This may help with the rusty bolts.
