Default I have no idea what to do...Please help!!!

Ok, I have a 2004 Durango 5.7L Hemi. When I first start driving it, it will be fine and then driving down the highway the tranny feels like it drops outta the truck and from that point whenever I stop and try taking off it feels like I am in a standard starting off in 3rd gear. Then it takes forever to accelerate. Now lately the high temp light comes on and then goes off in a matter of minutes. It started doing this about a month ago every now and then, now its everyday. The check engine light is on and I have not checked the code yet. I have checked all the fluids and I have no idea when the last service was done on it for the tranny.
I have a friend that is a mechanic that thinks it may be some sort of sensor that goes under the passenger side that has to do with the tranny and shifting.
I figured if it was the tranny going bad it would do it all the time. Does it being AWD have anything to do with it? I am not mechanically inclined at all, but definitely do not have $2500 for a new tranny.

Please help!!!!

My '04 5.7L was doing the same thing, except I was running around 3k/rpm at 35-40 mph. It wouldn't shift any after that, plus it made a horrible grinding noise before it all went south. With the AWD, I know my Durango has 4LO and 4LOCK. My actuator went out with my tranny so that at some point my 4LO had locked while I was cruising down the highway, which I think was what led to the demise of my tranny. Definitely get it checked out before it gets worse.
