Transmission
3.92 is your rear axle ratio, and it has nothing to do with the gears in the transmission. The 5-speed auto is the same in all the 2nd gen durangos in terms of the gearing. 3.92 is a good rear end ratio if you plan on towing alot with the durango or you just want a lot of acceleration off the line. It won't get you as good as mileage as a 3.55 ratio axle will. I have 3.55 ratio in my axle and I only pull a small 5x10 flatbed trailer about 25% of the time. With the hemi, I will get upto 23mpg on the highway if I keep my speed around 65mph.
As far as checking what you have, (1) check the window sticker if you still have it, (2) crawl underneath and look if it is stamped on the rear axle, (3) it may posted on a sticker on the driver door, or (4) have a dealer do a VIN search and they can tell you every option on it.

Alright, I quit being lazy and went and looked on my 04. There is a equipment identification sticker located inside your glove box. It will tell you the axle ratio, paint codes, tranmission type, etc.
