Default 06 SLT 4.7 - Smoke on startup, "throaty" engine sound

As the title suggests, I have an 06 Durango SLT non-hemi. Thus far this thing has been good to the family and my wife loves it. (Except for the lower ball joints I had to replace 4th of July weekend, it has been very low maintenance).

Approx. 159k miles. We bought it about 3 years ago used and nearly the entire time it always produces a moderate cloud of white smoke on startup. Only on a cold start though, after initial start there is no smoke at all. Never really was a cause for concern.

It does burn oil but there are no leaks visible at all, no smoke while driving, no burnt oil smell, and does not leak when parked. I just know it is burning it because I have to add it more often than my other vehicles.

There has been an P0058 HO2S Heater Control Circuit High (Bank 2 Sensor 2) code for about a year. Chalk this up to laziness as I know where it is and how to fix it, just never have as it runs fine, just has the check engine light on. Plan on finally fixing that this weekend.

As of about 3 weeks ago though, a new symptom has appeared. Again, this generally only happens on a cold start, but will subside within about 5 minutes of driving and not show back up until next startup.

When you start it, best I can describe, is it sounds very "throaty" like I have made some modifications but I haven't. I think you all know what I am talking about. Still getting the white smoke, but the throaty noise is new. It doesn't sound "rough" so to speak, though.

Also have noticed some ticking as well after the throaty start. Sounds sort of like lifters, but I believe the 4.7 is OHC, so no lifters.

any suggestions?

I would almost say it is a leaky manifold except that it only does on start-up + 5 minutes.

Mike

Check exhaust manifold bolts.
