05 Durango grinding noise/vibration
Recently when the vehicle is under power there is a vibration and a similar sound as when the traction control kicks in. There is no noise coasting only accelerating. I put it up on jack stands, pushed the button to disable the traction control and put it is gear. As I accelerate the traction control light flashes and engages making the noise. There is not any noise at the hub wheel end. I also noticed orange gasket material around the front axle cover so I'm assuming it has been opened before. I bought this with 80k km and now it has 98k km, 5.7 hemi. Any ideas? How do I troubleshoot further?
I believe that you can't run a Durango on jackstands, the 4WD and ESP system feel it has no traction at all and try to correct it, the traction control button won't disengage all the system. At least that told me a Goodyear mechanic, anyway i tried just to know and just like you, the light flashes and make a lot of noise. Don't do it, it can hurt badly.
Check the fluid level in both differentials, if i'm correct, to change the fluid completely you have to open the diff cover, so, orange sealant means it has been changed, and with 80000 km, that's a good thing.
Is your truck 4x4? If so, check the oil level in the transfer case, low level might make the transfer run hard, grind and loose power under load.
