Question Help! Motor questions

So I thought it would be a great idea to buy an 2004 Durango 5.7 hemi vehicle that didn't run because it needed a motor. I didn't realize how expensive a replacement motor would be. So now I'm torn in trying to get a used motor without a ton of miles or to just buy a remanafactured motor? Any suggestions? Or any suggestions which companies are safe to through? My husband can do the install, I just need to find the motor.

Used would be the cheapest if cost is the main concern.

Cost is a factor but I'm also terrified to buy a used one and have it blow up after a month of driving. I guess there are some significant issues with the years 5.7. Everyone I find used has a million miles on it too. I'm not sure how to proceed. I'd rather pay more if it will last longer at this point.

Where are you located and what do you consider to be an acceptable amount to pay?

I'm from Connecticut. I don't have a core that can be fixed so I've been running into that issue as well. So my husband asked me to find something that doesn't request a core which hasn't been easy either.

You can try calling Carolina Machine although for anything like that I prefer to stay fairly local (which they are to me). You're a ways away but they do ship nationwide. Their pricing model is to list a core charge that is collected up front. If they can find a core, then they build it on that and you get the core charge back when/if they get your core. Their 5.7L pricing is:
Core: $595
Short block: $1296
Long block: $2396

So you'd be looking at $3k plus shipping if they could find a core. That's why I asked about how much you want to pay.

Here's one for $2750 shipped for CA with two year warranty, but has a core charge.

There are many more out there done and ready, and the average price seems to be around $3k with the core charge. You shouldn't have a problem finding one that doesn't require an actual core.....they just charge you for it.

Are those prices for remanafactured engines? Do you recommend that over trying to find a used one?

Yes, $3k seems to be the average price for a remanufactured long block. This is something that is going to use your accessories, intake, covers, sensors, etc. It's not a drop-in ready piece.

Used one....good luck. I would guess you'd be looking at around $1500 for one and what's the chances of finding one with under 100k on it? It can be done I guess. I've bought a wrecked vehicle before just to use for parts and then sold off the rest.

The question comes down to what's your peace of mind worth? If this is an extra vehicle then you've got all the time in the world to decide and/or look around for something.

If you are "terrified" of a used on blowing up, your choices are new or remanufactured. Remanufactured will come with a warranty. If you can't afford new and are scared of used, then remanufactured is your only other option besides getting your current engine rebuilt.

Do you have any idea what is wrong with the one you have? Does it turn or is it locked up? If you get a used motor have someone go through it and freshen it up. If it's in decent shape that will be a lot cheaper.
